From the initial explorations in 2007 to its formal launch in 2011, the ASEAN-Swiss Partnership on Social Forestry and Climate Change (ASFCC) has aimed to improve food security and climate change adaptation capacities in ASEAN Member States by developing and improving social forestry initiatives. Social forestry recognizes that the people who depend on local forests are best placed to look after them, and that allowing communities to manage and use forest resources can have positive social, environmental and economic impacts.

Now, as the project comes to a close, partners, ASEAN Member State Representatives and representatives from the international community will consider ASFCC’s achievements. Together they will reflect on important lessons and develop the next plan of action for social forestry and ASEAN cooperation.

Over nine years, ASFCC has influenced social forestry policies at the local, national and regional levels. This work has contributed to a 100 percent increase in the total hectares of forests managed by communities across ASEAN. If Cambodia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand and Viet Nam reach the targets they have set, the total forest area managed by local communities will exceed 20 million hectares by 2030.

ASFCC's final event will take place at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, Indonesia from 25 to 26 February 2020.
