RECOFTC Lao PDR and Open Development Laos will host a training on data literacy for members of Lao civil society organizations that support good forest governance.

Data literacy is the ability to read, write and communicate data. This skill includes an understanding of data sources and analytical methods to derive meaningful information from data.

The data literacy training will enhance participants’ knowledge and ability to tell data-driven stories.

The workshop will cover these topics:

  • Module 1: From evidence to stories
  • Module 2: Finding data, data collection and data formats
  • Module 3: Understanding data
  • Module 4: Data visualization
  • Module 5: Thinking like a data journalist
  • Module 6: Digital rights and data security

The training will occur over three weeks from January to March 2021:

  • Week 1: 18 to 22 January 2021, 8:30 a.m. to 16:30 p.m. ICT
  • Week 2: 15-19 February 2021, 8:30 a.m. to 16:30 p.m. ICT
  • Week 3: 15-19 March 2021, 8:30 a.m. to 16:30 p.m. ICT

Participants will apply their new skills to develop a project based on forest-related data.

The data literacy training is organized by the EU-funded Voices for Mekong Forests (V4MF) project. The V4MF project works to build the capacities of non-state actors such as civil society to improve forest governance, especially those engaged in the FLEGT VPA and REDD+ processes. RECOFTC leads the project in partnership with WWF-Greater Mekong, East-West Management Institute-Open Development Initiative (EWMI-ODI), Preferred by Nature (formerly known as NEPCon), NGO Forum on Cambodia, Lao Biodiversity Association, Myanmar Environment Rehabilitation-conservation Network (MERN), Raks Thai Foundation, and People and Nature Reconciliation (PanNature).
