Free, Prior, Informed Consent (FPIC): A Tool for Better Forest Governance
Free, Prior, Informed Consent (FPIC): A Tool for Better Forest Governance

Free, prior and informed consent (FPIC) is increasingly recognized as an obligation for the government, the private sector and organizations interested in implementing projects with communities. FPIC is an effective way to safeguard rights of local communities for sustainable investment and development. Organizations and the private sector can incorporate elements of good forest governance into forest landscape projects by following FPIC.

Participants in this course will learn the complexities of negotiating community consent and acquire skills to effectively implement an FPIC process. Participants will develop action plans for applying FPIC in their country contexts.

Participants are typically professionals working in the private sector, the government and civil society. They engage with communities and want to incorporate FPIC in their projects, as well as support communities to safeguard their rights. In addition to exposure to the theoretical principles and values of FPIC, participants will explore practical examples of FPIC implementation and apply in-class learning in interactions with relevant actors on a field trip in Thailand.
