Making carbon markets work for Indigenous Peoples and local communities

Grounded in international law and recognized standards, this practical, rights-based toolkit is designed to help Indigenous Peoples and local communities make informed decisions, safeguard their rights, and engage effectively in carbon projects and the broader carbon markets. It equips practitioners, including non-governmental organizations, advocates, and interested individuals and communities, with clear guidance to protect rights, ensure meaningful participation, promote fair benefit-sharing and address land tenure, grievance redress and gender equality.

The toolkit comprises six stand-alone, globally applicable modules that can be adapted to local contexts and used individually or in combination:

  • Module 1: Introduction to carbon markets
  • Module 2: Effective participation
  • Module 3: Benefit-sharing
  • Module 4: Grievance redress mechanisms
  • Module 5: Land tenure
  • Module 6: Gender equality

Each module has clear objectives and is complemented by supporting materials including diagrams, checklists, case studies and links to relevant online resources.
