In celebration of World Wildlife Day, a global observance dedicated to safeguarding the planet’s biodiversity, young forest champions in Cambodia and Lao PDR jointly launched youth forest and wildlife campaigns on 3 March 2026.

The campaigns, implemented through RECOFTC’s ‘Youth as guardians of the forest’ project, aim to advocate for forest ecosystem restoration, forest and wildlife protection against illegal forest crimes, and stronger community-based forest management. They seek to mobilize local communities and the next generation of environmental stewards to protect forests, conserve wildlife and promote sustainable practices rooted in local knowledge and cultural heritage.

The ongoing campaigns focus on four key themes – deforestation and community forestry, wildlife and biodiversity conservation, forestry and community development, and forest fires and land management. The posts promote traditional forest management practices and advocate for strong, inclusive community-based forest governance. They raise awareness of ecological balance, relevant laws and policies, and practical conservation tools and methods. They also highlight the value of healthy forests and natural resources, including wildlife, in supporting livelihoods and community development. Similarly, they help increase understanding of scientifically informed and controlled burning practices for healthier forests and landscapes.

Over the next six months, youth teams in Cambodia and Lao PDR will carry out a range of community-based awareness activities, including tree planting, workshops, cross-community dialogues, local radio broadcasting, mini role-play performances and documentary photography and videography.

The voices of youth and community members will be amplified through broad social media outreach and engagement in local and regional dialogue platforms. Youth leadership in environmental stewardship will also be strengthened through cross-country exchanges and peer learning opportunities.
