Explore research to policy workshop–Lao PDR

Forest landscape in Cambodia

Explore supports five multi-country research teams advancing knowledge and piloting new approaches to sustainable forest governance in Lao PDR. Using participatory action research, these teams engage key stakeholders at both the landscape and national levels, ensuring that research design and implementation reflect diverse perspectives. The aim is to generate robust findings that can inform decision-making and policy processes.

This research to policy workshop will strengthen policy influence planning and engagement by supporting research teams to:

  • develop clear, context-specific policy objectives
  • build a shared understanding of governance problems and related legal frameworks
  • identify strategies for engaging priority stakeholders over realistic timelines
  • look into structures for ongoing collaboration, such as a National Advisory Committee (NAC) or policy mentorship network

Learning objectives

By the end of the workshop, participants will have:

  1. shared early insights from each Lao-based project to inform cross-learning
  2. refined at least one SMART policy objective per project
  3. identified policy influence outcomes for priority stakeholders
  4. mapped resources, strategies and networks to support these outcomes
  5. outlined options for an NAC or policy mentorship structure in Lao PDR

Expected participants

The meeting will be attended by Explore researchers from Lao PDR, RECOFTC Lao PDR staff, RECOFTC’s programme lead on governance and rights and RECOFTC’s senior policy and gender inclusion coordinator.

Explore is a research network and community of practice focused on expanding and applying knowledge related to forest landscape governance in Southeast Asia.

Launched in October 2020 and funded by the Government of Sweden, Explore is hosted by RECOFTC in partnership with the Center for International Forestry Research and World Agroforestry (CIFOR-ICRAF) and collaborates with universities, research institutes, governments, civil society organizations, local communities and the private sector across Southeast Asia.
