From research to publication: Academic writing and publishing

Explore peer learning session
Forest landscape in Cambodia

Background

Peer-reviewed publications can increase the visibility and credibility of research while contributing to wider academic, policy and practice discussions on forest landscape governance.

As Explore-supported research progresses, research teams are shifting from data collection and analysis to synthesizing findings and communicating research outcomes.

An Explore-wide needs assessment identified academic writing and publication as a priority capacity development need. In response, the Explore Secretariat at RECOFTC is organizing a peer learning session that brings together researchers from across the network to share practical experiences and lessons from the publication process.

The session will cover topics such as preparing manuscripts, selecting appropriate journals, managing co-authorship, responding to reviewers and navigating common publication challenges. It will help researchers strengthen their academic writing and publishing skills, learn from peers and learn about how to take their research findings into high-quality academic publications.

Objectives

The session aims to:

  • share practical experiences in academic writing and publishing among Explore researchers
  • strengthen participants’ skills in preparing, submitting and revising manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals
  • explore practical approaches to common challenges in the publication process
  • support peer learning, collaboration and knowledge exchange across the Explore research network
  • encourage research teams to develop publication plans for the remainder of the programme

Resource persons

The session will feature three researchers from the Explore research network with strong publication records and extensive experience in publishing peer-reviewed journal articles. Each researcher will share practical lessons and insights from their own publication experience, with a focus on different aspects of the research-to-publication journey.

  • Muhammad Alif K Sahide, Faculty of Forestry, Hasanuddin University, Indonesia
  • Nyein Chan, Kyoto University of Advanced Science, Japan
  • Rahmanta Setiahadi, Merdeka University of Madiun, Indonesia

The Explore Secretariat will facilitate discussion and moderate the Q&A.

Expected participants

Principal investigators, co-principal investigators, researchers, graduate students and early-career researchers involved in Explore projects.

Expected outcomes

  • Improved knowledge and practical understanding of academic writing and publishing among participants
  • Greater confidence among participants in preparing, submitting and revising manuscripts for peer reviewed publications
  • Improved capacity among research teams to identify publication opportunities arising from their research and plan publications strategically
  • Strengthened peer learning, knowledge exchange and collaboration across the Explore research network

Tentative agenda

The session will combine short presentations, a moderated panel discussion and audience Q&A. The format will emphasize practical experiences and peer learning, with speakers encouraged to share examples, lessons learned and approaches that participants can apply to their own research and publication plans.
