Prescribed burning manual for fuel management

The prescribed burning manual for fuel management is a practical resource designed to assist community forest members, local leaders and field officers in managing combustible fuels in a safe, systematic and effective manner. It provides clear and evidence-based guidance on the use of planned and controlled fire, with a particular focus on the mountainous regions of Thailand. In these areas, prescribed burning remains necessary for effective fuel management in forest and agricultural landscapes due to challenging terrain.

The manual was developed through collaboration between RECOFTC and the Faculty of Forestry, Kasetsart University. Key stakeholders, including local communities, the Royal Forest Department and the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, reviewed the content. The manual uses plain language and includes illustrations to enhance accessibility.

The manual is organized into four key sections:

  • Introduction to fuel management in community forest areas
  • Preparation before prescribed burning
  • Implementation during prescribed burning
  • Monitoring and restoration following prescribed burning
