Their adoption could offer an opportunity to achieve large-scale area-based conservation targets and reduce biodiversity loss. OECM recognition should be accompanied by a comprehensive framework of clear, explicit and culturally appropriate incentives that tangibly benefit local communities while supporting conservation objectives.
